'The Inquisitory' by Robert Pinget
This novel consists entirely of the (almost) interminable interrogation of a
deaf old servant who may or may not have witnessed an unspecified crime that may
or may not have occurred. The reader is left to sift through this incredible
mass of often dubious or contradictory but highly specific detail, and to wonder
both about how we impose plot and narrative on the mass of ‘real’ detail that
surrounds us every day, and about how the imagination can be pressured to give
convincing texture to things that are not ‘true’ at all.
